Abstract

Composite rods are formed from groups of axially moving component rod-like articles (14, 26) by applying angularly spaced uniting elements (42a,58a) over the junctions between articles. The uniting elements may be patches or lines of adhesive, or strips or filaments of wrapper or fibre-reinforced adhesive. Continuous strips could be applied to form a continuous composite rod. The invention is particularly applicable to articles of the tobacco industry and apparatus is disclosed for forming composite filter rods from alternating component filter portions. <IMAGE>
