Abstract

This invention relates to a method of treating spent caustic effluents containing sulphides from hydrocarbon cracking processes. The method involves aerial oxidation of the sulphides in the presence of a manganese compound as catalyst. It is believed that the process converts the sulphide to the thiosulphate which is relatively innocuous to both animal and marine life when compared with conventional methods which convert sulphide to SO2 or H2S. The catalyst used is also non-toxic and the alkali component of the effluent is recoverable.
