Abstract

A process for the production of m-benzoyl hydratropic acid by heating 2-methyl-3-(5-phenyl-5-keto-pentyl)- maleic anhydride at a temperature of about 200 DEG to about 240 DEG C in an acid environment. Said environment can be provided by the aqueous solution of a strong inorganic acid, such as HC1, or by the chlorohydrate of a heterocyclic base, such as pyridine hydrochloride.
