Abstract

An alkaline diagnostic preparation is used in a procedure for inflating the stomach of a patient to enable double-contrast barium meal radiography. In the procedure two liquid formulations are swallowed sequentially. The first formulation is a non-toxic alkaline solution or suspension of a carbonate or bicarbonate which may be coloured, flavoured and thickened. The second formulation comprises a solution of a food grade acid.
