Copying telegraphs. - In the transmission of pictures to a distance a representation of the picture is first formed on which light and shade variations are represented by raised lines or corrugations adapted to co-operate with a stylus to produce sounds as in a phonograph, which are converted to corresponding current variations and transmitted by wireless, or to produce groups of current impulses of definite frequency, the number of impulses per group depending upon the intensity of tone of each picture element. The receiver reproduces the picture photographically under control of the received current variations, and is synchronized by a start-stop device under control of impulses from the transmitter end sent at each rotation of the transmitter and of a frequency different from that of the picture impulses. The received picture currents after successive passage through a radio-frequency amplifier, detector, audio-frequency amplifier, and audio-transformer pass through the wire of a stretched wire galvanometer.
