Straightening; dies.-Relates to devices of the kind in which the nail is straightened between two grooved elements held in a pair of co-operating jaws and consists in forming the jaws with recesses in which the elements are adjustably held, the elements extending beyond the sides - of the jaws and being recessed round the grooves to enable the nail heads to be levelled. The jaws may be operated by hand or power. The straightening elements are cylinders c, provided with longitudinal grooves a of different croessections to accommodate nails of different shapes and sizes. The cylinders project beyond the sides of the jaws a and are recessed at the ends round the grooves to receive the nail-heads, which may be levelled by being hammered or pressed into the recesses. The parts d<1> between the grooves may be used to straighten flat strips. The cylinders are revoluble in the recesses a<3> in the jaws so that the desired pair of grooves can be brought into line with the nail between, the said nail being straightened by pressing the cylinders together by means of the levers b. The cylinders may be grooved as shown in Fig. 2 to receive the jaws, the bottom of the groove having flats h on which a spring f bears to hold the desired grooves in register. When the cylinder is to be removed from the jaw the spring f is pushed into a recess i' by an instrument introduced through an opening j. In a modification, Fig. 6, the cylinder is held in place by rings e sprung into grooves c<2>. The cylinders are shown hollow to secure lightness and in order that they may be used to straighten the legs of V-shaped staples &c. The ends of the jaws mav be bevelled at a<1> so that the device when made as a hand tool may be used to extract nails &c.
