Bichromated colloid and like processes; photomechanical printing-surfaces; ornamental photographs; plates and films; toning.-A sensitive coating, more particularly for the production of images on metal, films, glass &c., comprises a resinous or gum varnish with which is incorporated a photo-sensitive oil such as tung oil, to which may be added an accelerator such as ferric oxide, zinc oxide, manganese dioxide, or lead iodide. When exposed to a projected image, or under a negative, the exposed parts are rendered more soluble than the unexposed parts. An example for the production of a red positive is described, in which a resinous or gum varnish containing 3 per cent of iodine is spread upon a surface and exposed to an image until the coating feels dry or partly tacky. The duration of exposure varies from a few seconds to a few minutes, according to the sensitiveness of the coating. The print is dipped into oil coloured red with carbon tetrachloride for a quarter of a second, the image is then developed in benzine, and the print is dried. The coating is stated to be useful in the production of photo engravings and in all cases where a strong acid-resisting coating is required.
