Abstract
17,525. Macdonald, D. B. Dec. 15. [Cognate Application, 5551/16.] In the manufacture of picric acid, the picric acid produced is separated from metallic salts present in the product of nitration by dissolving it out by means of benzene. In the manufacture of picric acid by treating benzene with nitric acid in the presence of mercury, the process may be applied by mixing mercury, nitric acid, and benzene, agitating, heating until the reaction is complete, blowing off the nitrobenzene by steam, then adding fresh benzene, drawing off the solution of picric acid in benzene, heating this to drive off the benzene, and crystallizing the picric acid. In the manufacture of picric acid by sulphonating phenol and treating the sulphonic acid with an alkali nitrate, the mixture of picric acid and alkali sulphate or bisulphate is treated with benzene in the presence of a mineral acid, such as sulphuric acid, the benzene solution of picric acid is drawn off and treated as described above. Apparatus for carrying out the process consists of a mixing pan 1, in which nitration is effected, and into which benzene is run after the reaction to dissolve the picric acid, and a crystallizing-pan 7, into which the picric acid solution in benzene is run from the pan 1 and decomposed and the picric acid crystallized. The pan 1 is provided with an agitator 2, a heating or cooling jacket 15, a condenser 3, storage vessels 6, 31, 32, for the recovery of the nitric acid and nitrobenzene, and a pipe 28 for admission of steam to drive off the nitrobenzene. The pan 7 is also provided with a jacket 16, a condenser 8, a pipe 9 to lead condensed benzene back to the pan 1, pipe 10 leading to a storage tank 11 and a tank 14 to receive the liquor drained off from the picric acid crystals. Specifications 126,675 and 126,676 are referred to. o-Mononitrophenol may be recovered from the mother-liquor from the picric acid crystals by driving off benzene and nitrobenzene by steam.
