Abstract
16,596. Napier & Son, D., and Rowledge, A. J. Nov. 24. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing. - In epicyclic variable-speed gearing of the interengaging planetpinion type, the planetcarrier is secured to the driven shaft, and the sunwheels, one of which may be replaced by a toothed ring, are provided with suitable brakes and with clutches for connecting them to the driving-shaft. In the form shown in Fig. 1, five forward speeds and a reverse may be obtained. The driven shaft B is connected by a spider B' to a cage J, J<1> carrying spindles G, H, which may be duplicated, on which turn planet-wheels G', G<2> gearing with sun-wheels C, D, and planets H<1>, H<2> gearing with sun-wheels E, F, the wheels G', H' also gearing together. Electro-magnetic clutches A', C', A<2>, D<2> are provided for connecting the sunwheels C, D to the driving shaft A, and similar brakes L', E<2>, L<2>, F<2> are arranged to hold the sun-wheels E, F. The sunwheel D may also be braked by a brake L. The high-speed solid drive is obtained by clutching both wheels C, D to the driving-shaft, and four other speeds by driving the sun-wheels C, D and braking the sun-wheels E, F, alternatively. The reverse is obtained by braking the wheel D and driving the wheel C. Instead of providing a brake for the wheel D, a second twin wheel D may be arranged in a suitable position and provided with a brake, being engaged by an additional planet-pinion. The sun-wheel F may be replaced by a toothed ring which surrounds the gearing and engages the outside of the planet-pinion G<2>. Where twin wheels D are used, the toothed ring may also engage with the additional planet-pinion. The casing K is divided into three compartments by partitions K<1>, K' so that the gearing may be protected from fragments worn from the clutch and brake surfaces, and that the lubrication may be regulated independently. Fig. 7 shows a gear giving three speeds and a reverse, in which mechanical clutches are used. The sun wheel F, and consequently the planet-wheel H<2>, is dispensed with, the wheels C, D being clutched by cone clutches C<2>, D<2> operated by a spring M and by separate levers P', Q<1>. Brake drums D3, E<2> for the wheels D, E are provided. The speeds are obtained as before, but two speeds are lost owing to the absence of the brake sunwheel F. The wheel D may be duplicated as before. The broad wheels G<1>, H<4> may be replaced by two integral narrow wheels.
