Abstract

15,980. Watney, G. Nov. 12. Swivelling w h e e l hubs; brakes, arrangement and disposition of.-In motor-vehicles, more particularly of the kind in which all four wheels are steered and driven, the steering-pivot is arranged with its axis in the plane of the wheel, which is driven through a universal coupling the centre of which lies in the axis of the steering- pivot. A brake drum is provided, the central vertical plane of which coincides with that of the wheel, the bearings of which comprise floating bushes and thrustrings and work in an oil bath. ,The axle casing b is provided with a spherical bracket c having upper and lower bearings d for the steering-pivots g, which are formed in one with a cylindrical stepped bearer h supporting the wheel bearings, the hub of the wheel is formed in two parts m, n forming bearing- surfaces for floating bushes k, i; thrust-washers l are provided. The parts m, n are held together by bushes p keyed in position by pins q which engage grooves r in driving-pins s. The pins s are formed with heads t which engage slots or keyways u in the spherical end of the line-axle v. An adjusting-screw w is provided for alining the centre of the axle-end with the pivot pins, the adjustment being effected against the pressure of a spring at the differential end of the axle; or the positions of the screw w and spring may be reversed. To render the bearing dust-proof and to provide an oil bath, a plate 2 and felt washers z, 1 are provided. A brake drum 7 is formed on the wheel disk 8, and the brake shoes 9 are actuated by a toggle-operated cam 12 formed on an extension 14 of one of the stecring-pivots. The profile of the cam 12 is varied radially so as to vary the braking action in different steering positions of the wheels.
