Shell-bodies, cleaning.-The interiors of ordnance shells are cleaned by means of an abrasive agent, such as fine chilled shot, grit, sand, &c., the shells so charged being mechanically given a circular or elliptical movement, without rotation about their axes, and in planes approximately at right-angles thereto. Upon a power-driven shaft B are mounted eccentrics C having straps in the form of frames D anchored by an arm D<1> to an oscillatory pivot D<2>, and upon the frame are concentricallyarranged holders E provided with supporting- cradles and adapted to take the bodies of the shells, which are secured by set-screws F. The anchoring-arm D<1> may be arranged for changing to the opposite side of the frame in order to reverse the inclination of the shells, and the driving-connexions may be to the arm instead of to the shaft.
