Abstract
14,274. Spaulding & Sons Co., J., [Assignees of Lougee, W. S., and English, A. M]. Oct. 21, 1914, [Convention date]. Channel-opening.-In a machine for crimping or corrugating the lips of insoles, an insole c, Figs. 1 and 4, is fed across an adjustable table 120 by gripping-jaws 60, 61 which engage the feather b, the lower jaw 61 being closed against the action of a spring 75 by a cam-actuated lever 70, while the upper jaw, which is secured by a rocker frame 64, is moved with the frame to feed the work through the machine. The crimping-means comprise a pair of tools 26, 27, Fig. 5, formed with noses 28, 29 adapted to force the insole lip into recesses 13, 14, Fig. 6, in an anvil 10, which is adjustably mounted in the front end of a treadle and spring-controlled lever 16, Fig. 1. The tools 26, 27 are carried in a lever 30, which is adjustably pivoted to a camactuated lever 32, the timing of the different parts being such that the work is crimped during the intervals in the intermittent feed of the insole through the machine. In order to preserve the crimps, the tools are arranged as shown in Fig. 5, the tool 26 being rigidly connected to the lever 30, while the tool 27 has a sliding fit in the lever and is backed by an adjustable spring 43. The tool 27 is arranged so that its nose projects beyond that of the tool 26 and forces the crimp last formed into the recess 14 in the anvil before the tool 26 forces an uncrimped portion of the work into the recess 13 ; during the latter operation, the tool 27 slides back into the lever 30 against the pressure of the spring 43. For opening up the lip, the jaw 60 is provided with a bevelled under surface 92 to form a sharp narrow edge 93, which extends between the feather and the lip and turns the lip upwards as the insole is fed through the machine ; an adjustable gauge 94 determines the extent to which the lip is turned.
