Abstract
13,161. Barr & Stroud, and Macgill, C. D. Sept. 15. Rack-and-pinion lifts. -Consists of a flat rack-and-pinion device for shifting and clamping heavy pieces of apparatus situated on a support which is permanently or intermittently inclined to the horizontal plane or is subject to disturbance, for example a range-finder and its mounting which have to be moved from side to side of a ship's fighting-top. The top or other support carries a rack 1 which, as shown in Fig. 3, has alternate teeth 13 wholly or in part removed along about one-half of their width, and is fixed parallel to rails (not shown) supporting the load. The mounting to be shifted carries a shaft 2 with a handle and a disk 4 having two teeth 7, 8 of full width bounding a single tooth space 5. In the position shown, the load is clamped by the abutment of the disk on the edges of the teeth 9, 10; but when the handle is turned through half a revolution in a clockwise direction, the passage of the tooth 10 through the slot 5 is accompanied by a movement of the load to the extent of two tooth-pitches to the right, whereafter it is clamped again. The piece 6 on the disk may have more than one tooth space 5, and instead of engaging directly with the discontinuous rack, it may gear with a pinion which has alternate teeth shortened, and engage a continuous rack on the supporting-surface either directly or through additional gearing.
