Abstract
12,800. King, W. J. H. Sept. 7. Torpedoes, locomotive. -Consists in providing torpedoes with a time or distance fuse operated by the mechanism which propels the torpedo. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the charge is exploded electrically when a pin d' on a rotatable disk d comes into contact with a corresponding pin or stop on the insulated face e<1> of a worm-wheel e. The disk d is slowly rotated through a train of gearing b-c from the main propelling-mechanism of the torpedo. The worm-wheel e is initially adjusted to regulate the distance the fuse is to run, by means of a worm spindle f terminating in a disk g fitted in a hole in the skin of the torpedo and adapted to be rotated by means of a key engaging external holes in the disk. The worm-wheel e and disk g are graduated for distances. In a modification, the charge is fired by a spring-mounted striker carried on the disk d hitting a cap or detonator arranged in a recess in the worm-wheel e.
