Abstract

12,457. Adams, F. H. Aug. 31, 1914, [Convention date]. Returning sound-box to starting point; stopping.- A repeating-attachment for gramophones, of the kind in which a hinged radial track arm is tilted at the end of a reproduction so as to return the sound-box, is provided with means for positively lowering the track arm after the return of the sound-box. The track arm 10 hinged on an horizontal pin 10<a> carries at its outer end a pivoted member 14 with two fingers 14<a>, 14<b> lying on opposite sides of a threaded post 13 secured to a baseplate 13<a>, which rests on, and is driven by, the record-disk 3. The pivotal movement of the member 14 is limited, and it is held in either extreme position by a spring 14<c>. The post 13 has right and left hand spiral threads 13<e>, 13<d>, the right-hand thread 13<c> terminating at its upper end in a projecting cam 13<f>, and both threads terminating at their lower ends in a circular groove 13<e>. The soundbox is moved inwards quickly at the end of a record by a spiral groove 3<a>, which may be formed in the record or in an arm pivoted to the base 13<a>. An arm 16 attached to the sound-box strikes a projection 14<d> on the member 14, thereby removing the finger 14<b> from the circular groove 13<e> and engaging the finger 14<a>. The right-hand thread 13<c> then raises the track arm into an inclined position, and the sound-box is lifted about the pivot 7a by the engagement of the track arm with a roller 11 carried by a bracket 12. The roller 11 then runs down the track arm, and the sound-box is carried to the edge of the disk. When the finger 14<a> reaches the cam 13<f>, the member 14 is swung back again so as to engage the opposite finger 14<b> in the groove 13<d>, thereby lowering the track arm into an horizontal position. Near the hinged end of the track arm 10 is pivoted a hand-controlled lever 17 having two projecting horns 17<b>, 17<c>, either of which may be placed in the path of the needle of the descending sound-box 4, which is thereby arrested at a point suitable for starting another reproduction. The lever 17 is locked in position by a tongue 17<d> engaging notches 17<e> in the underside of the track arm. When the lever 17 is swung over so that its tongue 17d engages the right-hand notch, Fig. 3, the horn 17<c> lies beneath a brake arm 8<b>, and in this case the effect of the tilting of the track arm 10 is to apply the brake 8<c> and to stop the turntable.
