Abstract

9896. Challiner, C. July 7. No Patent granted (Sealingfee not paid). Disk wheels.-In built-up metal wheels having spokes produced from sheet-metal blanks of channel or tubular cross-section, or from bars of channel, H, I or like cross-section, the spokes are fashioned with one or more radial grooves so that they are of twin or multiple formation throughout the whole or part of their length. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 3, spokes a of multiple tubular formation are produced by stamping the blanks into W-formation and bending over and welding together and to the central partdthe extending sides c as shown in dotted lines, or by riveting, welding, or otherwise securing a plate in place of the turned-over sides. The groove b may be uniform or tapered and may stop short of the hub or rim end of the spoke. The hub ends g of the spokes are shaped to fit together and form the nave in the assembled wheel, and these are preferably provided with tongues engaging slots in the bush h, and may be secured between an integral flange at one end and a separate flange at the other end of the bush, the latter flange having projections adapted to enter and close the slots in the bush. The spoke-ends may also be interlocked as described in Specification 1929/14. The outer ends of the spokes may be secured in sockets on the rim, or be provided with feet for attachment to the rim, or with extensions k which are welded together at n to form a continuous rim or felloe over which a type-carrying rim m may be mounted. The extensions k are preferably tubular and may be of uniform or tapering cross-section and be filled with wood or other material; or the parts at the sides of the extensions may be removed, and the outer and inner sides p, q pressed together, as shown in Fig. 10. The extensions may be formed by dividing the outer ends of the spokes and bending the divided parts. circumferentially as described in Specifications 1542/13 and 5398/13; or the spoke blanks may be of more or less Y-shape to provide for the formation of the extensions. Fig. 18 shows a construction in which radial members v of single or multiple channel section are spaced by an integral web x, which may have flat or corrugated surfaces or may have parts removed. Fig. 23 shows the application to spokes formed from bars of profiled metal, for example bars of channel, H, I, or like section. The web is provided with one or more grooves b, and the inner ends of the spokes are shaped to abut and form the nave of the assembled wheel by removing V-shaped parts g<3> of the web and pressing the sides together. According to the Provisional Specification, the extensions may merge into the body of the spoke on a comparatively wide curve, and both they and the hub ends may be tapered in the direction of the axis of the wheel.
