Abstract

9358. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, [Herrmann Aukam & Co.]. June 25. Tearing, severing by.-Materials, such as cloths for making handkerchiefs &c., are torn transversely by a machine provided with means for feeding the material to be torn, for gripping one edge of the material at two places at the desired distance from the preceding tear, and for making an initial cut in the edge and completing the tear across the material. A pair of endless chains 6, Fig. 2, comprising sections connected by transverse tearer-carriages with clamping-bars 7 extending between the chains; are mounted on and driven by sprocket-wheels 5. The bars 7 carry gripping-fingers 21, Fig. 7, which are actuated to grip one edge of the material, which passes over a table 20 to the underside of the chains. The material passes between, and is held by, a pad and a shoe 10 on a slide adapted to be moved on guides between and parallel to the bars 7, whereupon the slide is pressed by a cam-incline 35 and starts to move across the machine. A knife mounted to project through a slot in the shoe 10 makes an initial cut in the edge of the material, and the tear is completed by the cross movement of the slide. As the bars 7 pass over the top of the machine, the slide is returned to its initial position by a second cam-incline 37. One end of each chain section engages a sprocket-wheel 43 carried by plates, between which the end of the preceding section is secured, and by adjusting the positions of the wheels 43, the distance between the tears can be adjusted by increments equal to the pitch of the chain. Means for finer adjustment and for severing any threads projecting for a severed length or connecting it to the body of the material are also provided.
