Cellulose-trioxymethylene condensation products are obtained by the reaction of trioxymethylene on cellulose in the presence of ferric chloride or of organic acids, with or without dehydrating-agents, such as alum or calcium chloride. The trioxymethylene may be formed in the reaction, for example by treating cellulose with formaldehyde in the presence of ferric chloride or organic acids, drying in vacuo, and heating. The process can be applied to cellulose threads, films, moulded articles, &c. made from collodion, ammoniacal copper cellulose, or viscose solutions. The products yield formaldehyde on hydrolysis by acids.
