Abstract

9050. Spencer, A. G. June 19. Reflectors fitted to vehicles.-Periscopes, comprising two mirrors or equivalent optical devices arranged one below the other, are placed on the roof or sides of a locomotive or railway vehicle, to enable the driver or guard to obtain an indirect view of the track or train and to enable the guard by means of a lamp to flash signals or coloured lights to a reflector on the engine. The two telescopic periscopes a, f, shown on a locomotive in Fig. 1, are supported by india-rubber or other flexible means in brackets so that they can be readily adjusted in position or turned about a vertical or horizontal axis. India-rubber rings d fill up the space between the periscope and the roof of the cab. One form of periscope, Fig. 4, is telescopic and in two metal parts a, f secured together by a wing-nut and bolt k, g. It is provided with windows p, a removable cover q, and projections t which bear against the securing-clamps. The periscope may be of lazy-tongs type or otherwise adjustable in length, and the mirrors or their equivalent may be protected from smoke &c. by a hood or casing, and may be pivoted, or slidable in their planes, to enable them to be moved into an operative or inoperative position or reversed.
