Disk apparatus; helical springs, treating.-For grinding the ends of helical springs, they are compressed axially to a predetermined length and then passed between grinding-surfaces while they are held in their compressed condition. The compression is effected by feeding the springs laterally between guide-members 50 having converging surfaces which engage the ends of the springs, and the feeding-means may be adapted to grip the springs after they have been compressed and to hold them during the grinding operation. As shown, an endless travelling conveyer, supported by drums, carries pairs of jaws 37, 38, which when passing around the drumsseparate from one another, and when travelling between the drums close together, the springs being fed between the separated jaws, and gripped and carried between the grinding- surfaces when the jaws have closed. Each pair of jaws is mounted upon a link of the conveyer, the jaw 37 being fixed by a pin 39 entering an openended slot 40 in the link ; the base of this jaw fits down against the end of a spring 41 pressing against the other jaw 38, which is pivoted at 42 to the link. The springs are fed from a hopper 52, 53, in which they are normally supported by guard-plates 45 carried by the jaws 37. Owing to the opening, however, of each pair of jaws below tha hopper, a space is left between the rear end of the guardplate and the next jaw 37, and a spring is thus allowed to fall from the hopper upon the horn or rest 44 of the jaw 37, and it is then carried forward, compressed, gripped, and ground. One or more pairs of parallel grinding-wheels are used, and the wheels of each pair are adjustable towards and away from each other to correspond with the adjusted distance apart of the guide-members 50. As the conveyer passes around the drum at the opposite end of the machine, the opening of the jaws allows the springs to expand, and they are then engaged by two inclined stationary bars which discharge them from the machine.
