Abstract

6989. Wood, R. May 10. Balancing; inclination indicators, application of. -The longitudinal and lateral balancers of an aerial machine are controlled automatically by a pivoted standard 11 which is maintained in a vertical position by a balloon 10 attached to its upper end. The movements of the standard relatively to the machine are transmitted either directly or through an electric relay to the balancers. The balloon comprises a light metal casing 27 enclosing a fabric envelope 26 containing the buoyant gas. The standard 11 is mounted on gimbals at its centre of mass, which is adjusted by a weight 17. The standard moves switch levers e, l which control electric circuits having electro-magnets for actuating the tillers 23, 24 of the balancers. The device may be enclosed in a tank 25, which may be supplied with compressed air. The tank may be provided with indicators actuated by the standard for showing the longitudinal and lateral inclination of the machine. Two standards moving each in one plane only may be employed in place of the one standard mounted on gimbals.
