6533. Valkenburg, B. R. van. Aug. 14, 1914. Percussive instruments.-A drum action, applicable to orchestrions, comprises a pneumatic 5 the movable side of which carries the drum-stick 12. In order to connect the pneumatic alternately to exhaust and to atmosphere, the movable side may be linked to a recessed slide valve 23 above two ports. These communicate respectively with a suction chamber 14 and a diaphragm cell therein, the latter port being open when the drum is not being played, and alternately open and connected to the first port during playing. A valve operated by the diaphragm controls the connexion of the pneumatic 5 with atmosphere or the suction chamber 14. From this suction chamber, a pipe 37 leads to a small pneumatic 38 carrying a silencer, which rests on snares 4 and prevents resonance when the drum is not in use. Between the suction chamber 14 and the suction chest is a second diaphragm valve 47, of which the cell 46 is connected to a tracker duct by a passage capable of closure by a slide 54. Another passage from the same cell 46 leads to a hand-valve comprising a disk 50 on a pivoted arm 51.
