Abstract
6048. Gidden, W. T. April 22. Ammonium nitrate is obtained by blowing gaseous ammonia through a small quantity of water or solution of nitric acid, ammonia, or ammonium nitrate, and simultaneously introducing nitric acid of not less than 65 per cent but preferably 75-77 per cent strength. The process may be carried out in a closed vessel 9 provided with stirrers 3, a small quantity of wrater, nitric acid, or solution of ammonia, or ammonium nitrate being first introduced, after which gaseous ammonia and nitric acid of the above-mentioned strength are simultaneously introduced at 1' and 2 respectively, the rates of feed being adjusted to produce and maintain a temperature of 145,1550 C. while the mixture is kept slightly acid. The reaction mixture is finally neutralized and runs off at 8 as fused ammonium nitrate. When acid of 75-77 per cent is uesd, the water present in the product can be kept below 2 per cent, and may be reduced below 0-5 per cent by blowing air at 160‹ C. from a pipe 4 through the fused material. A further removal of water may be effected by breaking up the hot solidified product, for instance in a disintegrator. Specification 11,731/88 is referred to.
