Abstract

5852. Wild, W., [Assignee of Tscherne, A.]. July 31, 1914, [Convention date]. Cutting-out embroidery; vertical-cutter type for cutting sheet material in direction of feed. -Consists of a machine for cutting off the unembroidered edge of an embroidered fabric. The vertically reciprocating knife 1 is secured in a frame 2 which is carried by a slide 5. This slide engages by means of a projection 8 with the recessed head of a sleeve 10, which is worked up and down on a guide-post 11 by links and levers from a crank-shaft which is driven by gearing from the main shaft 24. The slide 5 is movable vertically on the end of a compound arm 3, 4 pivoted to the standard 7 and pressed forward by a spring 64. The lateral movement of the arm is controlled by rollers 60, 62, the former of which is carried on a lever 55, and the latter on an upright 61. The work-table 25 is clamped on a pillar 27; lying in the same plane with it is a guide-piece 28 secured to an arm 29 carried by another arm 30 on the member 3 of the compound arm. The guide-piece. Figs. 4 and 5, consists of two parts, the upper being guided on a projection 31 on the lower, and the distance between them being adjusted by means of a screw 32 to correspond with the thickness of the unembroidered fabric. The edge of the embroidered part passes over the lips 35, which also serve to protect the cutting- edge of the knife; the knife is retained in position on the guide-piece by the member 36. The work is drawn through the machine by the rollers 39, 40, and the severed edge is drawn off sideways by other rollers 41, 42. Under the influence of the spring 64, the lips of the guidepiece are kept in contact with the thickened edge of the embroidered fabric, and the knife fallows the same path. When moving outwards, the guide-piece is also caused to move forwards with the fabric, and the arm 3 turns to the right and, pressing against the roller 60, turns the lever 55, which throws out a clutch, coupling the roller 41 to its driving- means, so that the pull exerted on the severed strip is arrested. The clutch is thrown into action again by the spring 58. In a modified construction, the knife is arranged to turn on a vertical axis coincident with its edge, and means are provided for imparting movement to the compound arm, consisting of a moving belt to which the arm is clamped automatically by movement in one direction of the outer member of the arm.
