Abstract

5449. Pulsometer Engineering Co., and Bjornstad, J. April 10. Air vessels; priming.-In a liquid-pumping system, an horizontally-actuated air pump is arranged so that the air pumping proceeds until a certain liquid level is reached in the system. The applications to the priming and to the compression of air into the air vessel of an hydraulic pump are described. In the air pump shown in Fig. 1, the float in its upward or downward travel strikes against a stop e or f on its guiding-rod b and thereby actuates separate water inlet and outlet lift valves j, k, which are enclosed in a casing open to the tank containing the float. This actuation is effected through a lever h pivoted to the rod b, rocking about a pivot n with which a tumbler o is associated, and at its other end pivoted to a lever i to which the valves are secured. The air outlet and inlet valves s, t are of the lift type and are not mechanically connected. The apparatus is shown in Fig. 2 applied to the priming of a centrifugal hydraulic pump, the tank a drawing air from the pump casing through a pipe 1 and discharging this air through a pipe 2 into a reservoir 3, Fig. 1, above the tank, which reservoir is filled from a pipe 6 connected with the casing of the waterinlet valve, its level being controlled by a ball cock 4. The water supply may be derived from the pump delivery pipe which is kept filled with water, or from an independent source, while the exhaust water passes into the pump suction pipe 8. Fig. 3 shows the application to the air vessel of a water pump, used for securing a regular flow. The water supply for the tank is in this case derived from the water in the air vessel 9 and air is drawn in from the atmosphere and compressed into the air vessel until it forces the water-level therein below the port 10 by which water is supplied to the tank. In a modified apparatus, the lift water valves j, k are replaced by a three-way cock rotated by an arm pivoted on the guide-rod and provided with a tumbler weight.
