Abstract

5095. Canton, A. A. April 1. Sealing by fusing; depositing metallic capsules in situ.-Bottles, jars, &c. are sealed by uniting opposed surfaces of the stopper and the mouth of the bottle &c. by means of an interposed metallic layer deposited electrically or otherwise on those surfaces in a fine state of sub-division. Preferably metal is first deposited on the opposed surfaces and the two metallized surfaces are subsequently fused together. A washer may be inserted between the stopper or capsule and the mouth of the vessel prior to sealing the parts together. Layers C, D, Fig. 1, of metal are deposited on the top of the bottle neck A<1> and the underside of the flange forming the top of the stopper B, and the two surfaces C, D are brought into contact with one another and fused together. The layers C, D may be deposited by means of a hot blast, or from the vapour of a metallic salt by ultra-violet rays, or electrolytically. Or the metallized surfaces C, D, Fig. 2, may be fused to a metal washer E, which may be of U-section and packed with asbestos &c. In Fig. 3, a plain washer F is shown inserted between the surfaces C, D, a layer G of metal being deposited completely over the stopper R and the upper portion of the bottle neck A<1> to form a capsule ; the surfaces C, D may be fused to the washer F if desired. In another arrangement, the bottle neck A', Fig. 4, is provided with a groove A<2>, and the stopper B with a groove B' to receive a metal ring B<2>. The grooves A<2> B<1> having been metallized, the parts are heated, causing the metallized surfaces and the ring to become fused together. Metallized surfaces C, D may also be provided and fused together. An asbestos or wire loop B<3> may be provided on the stopper to assist in its withdrawal. Fusion of the metallized parts is preferably effected by placing the assembled parts in a rotating or alternating magnetic field. The ring-coil H, Fig. 6, is brought into position surrounding the bottle neck A', and simultaneously a plunger J is brought down to force the stopper B on to the top of the bottle neck. As the ring H comes Into place it closes a switch K, K<1>; on removal of the coil, the circuit is broken and the plunger remains on the stopper. When a loose washer or ring is used, fusion may be effected by inserting the heated ring between the metallized parts and pressing these parts together. The metals used may be tungsten, thorium, gold, silver, copper, and lead or lead alloys, and if a washer is employed it is preferably of a low-fusing metal such as copper or lead or lead alloys.
