Abstract

4856. Forrester, H. J. C., [New Process Oil Co.]. March 29. Hydrocarbon oils, cracking. - An apparatus for treating kerosene and heavier oils for the production of hydrocarbons suitable for use in lieu of gasolene or naphtha comprises a retort B supplied with a mixture of oil and water through a pipe C, a condenser L receiving the vapours through a pipe N and terminating in a closed receiver O whereby the requisite pressure is formed and maintained in the retort and the condenser, and a manually-operated valve P or other device in the pipe N by which a higher pressure can be maintained in the retort than in the condenser. A pressure of 3-10 atmospheres is used in the retort. The temperature varies with the oil under treatment and may range from 600‹ F. to 1900‹ F. A safety-valve S is fitted to the retort, and the receiver O is provided with a relief valve o.
