Abstract

4525. Short, H. O. March 23. Aerostats.-Valves for gas-containers of air-ships and balloons are so constructed that they do not project from the container and can be assembled from the exterior. The valve frame consists of two or more parts 1, 2, 3 and is carried by a sleeve 6 of fabric, rubber, &c., gripped between the parts 2, 3 and secured, for example by sewing, to the container 7. The valve frame is held within the container by a rigid tube 8, which bears at one end against the sleeve 6 and at the other against an annular diaphragm 9 of fabric stiffened at the edges by inextensible rings 10, 11 and removably secured in position by lacing to a ring 12 surrounding the aperature in the container 7. An annular flexible diaphragm 4, stiffened by an inextensible ring 5 and clamped between the parts 1, 2, forms the valve seat. The valve 14 is controlled by springs 16, preferably detachable, its movement being limited by cords or wires 15. The valve may be operated by hand by a cord &c. attached to an eye 19, or may be arranged to be opened automatically by excessive pressure within the container.
