Collapsible boats; life-boats. - In a life-boat having rigid longitudinal and athwartship collapsible bulwarks, the bulwarks H are arranged so that, when collapsed, they lie clear of each other at the corners ; canvas gusset-pieces fill in the corner spaces between the ends. The hinge joints are made water-tight by strips of canvas N lying between the edge of the bulwarks and the boat, or, as shown in Fig. 3, secured by a batten Q at one end to the bulwarks, and at the other end to the hull by a channelled batten R. An india-rubber cord S in the batten R adds to the tightness of the joint. The rowing thwarts are in two parts T hinged together at U and to the bulwarks at one end V, and supported at the centre by a hinged central stanchion X. The thwarts fold down as shown in dotted lines.
