Abstract
3534. Mundy, H. March 5. Stream-cutting machines; endless-chain machines ; rolling-machines.- Sweetmeats are cut from a plastic stick by a machine having a pair of cutting and shaping wheels which act in combination with a pair of endless mould chains so as to press or shape the severed material simultaneously with the cutting operation. The machine, as shown in side and end views in Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a pair of wheels f which receive the plastic stick from feedrolls g, cut it by means of points so as to leave thin webs of material between successive sweetmeat portions, and form the edges of the portions while they are passing between two bands b, c having moulds for shaping the faces of the sweetmeats. The action of the wheels f is illustrated in Fig. 2<a>, which is a plan view of a portion of the wheels and the lower mould band c. At the position marked *, a complete die is formed by the recesses on the cutter - wheels together with the adjoining moulds on the chains. The chains are mounted so as to have an increasing gap between them towards the exit slope i, and they are kept taut by sliding bearings and adjusting-screws e<1>. The drive is conveyed from the shaft a by gearing j, m to a shaft k, and thence by bevel-gearing o, p, q<1> to the chainwheels b, c and the cutting-wheels f. To prevent chilling and to .assist in polishing the sweetmeats, the feed-rolls g may be made of leather.
