Abstract

3418. Imray, O., [Scaife & Sons Co., W. B.]. March 3. Filters with horizontal filtering-layers.-Solids are separated from sewage, industrial waste waters, &c. by downward filtration through a bed of sand &c. through which a current of air or vapour is passed upwardly to prevent the packing of the residue on the top of the filter, and the supply of sewage is periodically stopped and the residue is dried by passing a stream of air or vapour through it or by evacuating the liquid by suction. The resulting cake of solid residue is removed. The filter comprises an open or closed tank 11 containing a bed of concrete 26 supporting a layer of sand 25, and supplied with sewage under pressure or otherwise. The filtered sewage is discharged under suction or otherwise through collecting-pipes 13, 12, 20. A reverse flow of waste-water may be supplied through a pipe 19. The air or vapour is supplied by a three or four way system comprising valved pipes 30, 32, 15, 23. The pipe 15 communicates with perforated pipes 16 below the sand and admits air supplied by the pipe 30, or hot gas or steam supplied by the pipe 32, during the filtration or the drying of the residue. The pipe 23 may also be employed, when a closed tank is used, to supply air or vapour for drying purposes. A relief valve 28 is fitted for the escape of gas.
