Abstract
2914. International Corset Co., [Assignees of Gardner, M. B.]. May 11, 1914, [Convention date]. Shearing; punches; end-capping rods.-In a machine for making corset or dress stays of intermediate sizes from stays of standard lengths, a. reciprocating member is provided with a cutter and a die engaging a corresponding fixed cutter and die, the cutters being used for severing the stay and the dies for fixing on the tip. The member 18, which carries at one end the cutter block 20 and at the other end the die 59, is slotted to receive an eccentric 24, which is oscillated on a shaft 23 by a hand-lever 25. The cutter block is provided with a series of concave recesses 51, of different sizes to suit the width of stay, the cutting-edges of which are oppositely inclined downwardly from their centres so as to give a symmetrical shearing cut and prevent the formation of burrs. The stationary cutter 28, which is formed with a series of projections 45 corresponding to the reoesses in the movable cutter, is laterally adjustable by screws 35 to allow for wear as far as the stops 68 on the upper cutter, and is held in adjusted position by screws 32 passing through elongated slots and countersunk recesses 34, Fig. 5. Each projection and recess is slightly wider than the standard size of stay for which it is used, so that stays of intermediate widths may be cut. A detachable work guide is placed over the fixed cutter, consisting of a plate 41 connected by screws 42 to a series of strips 38 forming part of a plate 36, which has a front flange 37 and side flanges 44 passing over ribs 43 on the sides of the cutter. The stay is held down during the upward motion of the cutter by a plate 39 screwed to the strips 38. After the stay has been severed, the tip is applied and the parts placed edgeways between nne pair of grooves 60, 61 nf the dies 59, 56, whereupon the member 18 is reciprocated to press the sides of the tip edgeways. The stay is then turned flatways. and the tip compressed between the recesses 62 in the die 56 and the projections 63 in the die 59.
