Paper bags, making.-Consists of mechanism for pressing the gummed folded bottoms of square-bottomed paper bags after leaving the mandrels of the machine and is shown applied to machines having mandrels p, Figs. 1 and 7, and an ejector plate 1 similar to those described and shown in Specifications 20,117/12 and 26,011/12. One or more intermittently rotating drums 19, Figs. 1, 5, 7, and 10, on horizontal spindles fixed to a plate 22 held at a distance from the table b of the machine by rods 23, have recesses 20 in the periphery formed with grooves 24 in the bottom and overhanging ledges 25. The ejector 1 which strips the bag from the mandrel is fixed to the face of a reciprocating plate 13 having also centring and other rods 16, 17 and pressers 14. As the bag is ejected, it is carried by the presser 14, moving through apertures in a stationary guide-plate 18, into the pocket, where the bottom is pressed against two spring-pressed plates 26, 27 carried by the plate 22. After withdrawal of the presser, the plate 26 springs back beyond the plate 27 in order to prevent the bag bottom from sticking to the plate 27. The bags are carried round in the pockets and after a suitable interval are removed by the ejectors 52, Figs. 5 and 7, into discharge troughs. If two or more mandrels are used at each step, two or more drums will be used to correspond. In the form shown, two drums are rotated intermittently by means of two ratchet-wheels 33, Fig. 4, secured thereto and interconnected by gearing 51. One wheel is rotated by means of an oscillating lever 34 with a pawl 43, and in order to stop the rotation of the drum, a hooked lever 45, pivoted to the plate 22 and engaging the other wheel, is connected to the lever 34 by means of an eye-bolt 48, through which passes, with some lost motion, a rod 47.
