Abstract

1361. Lawrence, E. E. April 16, 1914, [Convention date]. Rolling-machines.-Relates to the production of a continuous sheet of dough for use in biscuitcutting and like machines, and consists in subjecting a mass of dough to successive reductions in thickness by means of spaced continuously-moving compressing-surfaces while moving and supporting the dough by a number of travelling surfaces. Fig. 6 shows one form of machine comprising a feed belt 79 above which is arranged a mangle roll 104, a succeeding belt 76 passing around a roll 49 coacting with a bonding-roll 48, and a further belt 123 above which is arranged a compressing-member comprising a series of rolls 155 connected by links 156 and supported by a stationary member 157. A main shaft 3 drives, through a variable-speed belt gear 13, a shaft 16 which drives the rolls 48, 49 through worm gear 51, Fig. 1, shaft 52, and worm gearing 53, 55, and 54, 56, and through a chain, shaft 30, variablespeed belt drive 37, shaft 33, and chain 131, the driving-roll 129 of the belt 123. The rolls 155 are driven by sprockets on shafts 161, 177, the shaft 161 being connected to the shaft 3 by chain gearing. Motion is imparted to the bolt 79 by a driving-roll 90 driven from the roll 48 by chain gearing. The belts 79, 76, 123 are preferably driven at successively higher speeds, and the belt 123 is wider than the belt 79 to permit the dough sheet to expand aterally. Gaps are provided between the belts 79,76 and between portions of the belt 123 passing around rollers 125, 126 to free the lower surface of the dough after compression and permit readjustment of the material. The belts 79, 123 are tightened by rods 96, 99 and 149, 150 mounted on bell-crank levers and operable through ratchet devices. The bonding-roll 48 is mounted in bearings 60 adjustable by screws 61 operated by a hand-wheel 63 on one side of the machine and a chain 69 passing around sprockets 68, provision also being made for independent adjustment of each bearing. Similar adjusting-means 113, 171, 184 are provided for the mangle roll 104 and the shafts 161, 177 of the compressing-device 155. The adjustment of the rolls 48, 104 may be indicated by graduated disks 66, 120, which are moved relatively to fixed pointers 67, 121 by rack devices 64, 118. The dough sheet is delivered by the belt 123 to the gauging-rolls of the biscuit-cutting machine.
