Abstract
731. Ricks, F., and British United Shoe Machinery Co. Jan. 16. Boot-sole sewing - machines. - Machines for lasting and simultaneously inserting stitches or other permanent fastening-devices in the Veldtshoen construction of shoes, such as those of the type described in Specification 4058/12, are provided with an auxiliary member which beds the upper into the crease, and also feeds unfastened upper material towards the fastening- devices. The needle 1, awl 2, pincers 3, presserfoot, work-support, and other parts operate substantially in the same manner as is described in the above-mentioned Specification. The auxiliary member is shown at 6, and is mounted on the same pivot 7 of the feed-frame 8 as the oscillating awl-carrier 9. The member is slotted at 16 to serve as a rand guide, and is normally held with its work-engaging face 10 substantially in the same plane as that of the work-support, by a spring 11 connected to pins 12, 13 projecting respectively from the frame 8 and the member 6; the spring holds the pin 13 against a face 14 on the feed-frame. As the awl 2 approaches the end of its stroke, the carrier 9 lifts the member 6 and causes a sharply-formed edge 15 of its face 10 to bed the upper firmly into the crease, while the projecting sole margin is also bent upwards. The member 6 then moves with the awl 2 during the feed, and operates both as a means for retaining the upper in its bedded condition, and as a work-feeding device for the unfastened upper. The member 6 may be used instead of, or in conjunction with, the device for preventing the sole margin from being bent towards the last described in Specification 20,047/14.
