Abstract

140. Graves, S. Jan. 4. Paints and coating-compositions; varnishes.- A coating-composition impervious to water, hydrocarbon oils, &c. consists of a mixture of pyroxylin, dextrin, and alcohol and ether or wood alcohol. The flexibility and adhesion of the coating may be increased by adding a mixture of turpentine with castor oil, olive oil, nitroglycerine, or their equivalents. Pigments may be added. An example consists of 4 oz. each of pyroxylin and white dextrin, 3 oz. of castor oil, 5 oz. of Canada turpentine, and 1 gallon of wood alcohol or of a mixture of equal parts of alcohol and ether.
