Abstract

Spring-motor actuation.-A selecting-switch is operated by a spring motor and the tension of the driving-spring is restored by an electromagnetic motor set in operation at the commencement of the movement of the selector and actuated until the normal tension of the spring is restored. In the arrangement shown, a ratchet-wheel 2 mounted loosely on a shaft 1 is secured to a drum 3 carrying a contact ring 7. The shaft 1 connected to the drum 3 carries a wheel 12 gearing with a wheel 22 mounted on a shaft 21 carrying an escapement-wheel 23 and selector switch arms 24, 25. The spring motor is controlled by an escapement 26 connected to the armature 27 of a relay P, the armature 27 being held in its normal position by means of the armature 28 of a relay R. The ratchet-wheel 2 is provided with a detent 20 and an operating-pawl 16 mounted on the armature of a magnet 17. The wheel 12 is also provided with a contact ring 11 connected to a sleeve 14 on the shaft 1 and provided with a gap 10 on which a brush 9, carried bv the drum 3, normally bears. When the relay R is energized, the escapement 26 is released, and the spring motor operates to move the switch arms 24, 25, while the brush 9 is moved on to the conducting-ring 11, thereby completing the circuit of the magnetic motor as follows: battery 29, spring 19, magnet 17, brush 15, sleeve 14. ring 11, contact brush 9, ring 7, brush 8, and earth. The spring motor continues to operate the switch arms until the relay P is energized, whereupon the gear is locked by the escapement 26, while the magnetic motor continues to operate until the brush 9 engages the gap 10, and its circuit is broken. The employment of the wheels 22, 23 may be avoided by constructing the wheel 12 as an escapement-wheel.
