Abstract
23,223. Subers, L. A. Nov. 28. Compound fabrics.-Relates to a machine for constructing a laminated tubular fabric by winding adhesive fibrous bands alternately in opposite directions upon a straight tubular mandrel, the fabric being removable from the machine in the form of a hose or as a fabric band. The mandrel is formed in sections S which are joined together bv plugs S<4>, and is propelled on entering the machine by friction rollers M<17>, M<21>. A receptacle H applies a thin layer of powdered soapstone or the like, and a coating of rubber or the like is then applied by an extrusion die J having a conical nozzle J<1> partly closed by an annular screw-threaded nut J<2> secured by a lock-nut J<3>, whereby the thickness of the coating is regulated. A rotary screw W, Fig. 18<a>, having a changing lead may be employed to force the rubber from the nozzle. The mandrel next passes through a series of standards A supporting spool-carriers B, B<1>, rotatable in opposite directions and carrying spools B<3> from which adhesive fibrous bands C are unwound and laid upon the mandrel by rollers B<9>, the axes of which are suitably inclined to the axis of the mandrel. Spools B<4>, carried by the spool-carriers and driven by slip gearing from the spools B<3>, serve to receive bands of non-adhesive material C<1>, such as aluminium or Holland cloth, which is interwound with the adhesive bands on the spools B<3>. Suitable tension devices D are employed to maintain tension on the fibrous bands. The interwound fabric on the mandrel is compressed thereupon by radially-disposed pressure rollers T, and coated externally with rubber or the like from an extrusion die R of similar construction to the die J. The completed tubular fabric with the mandrel may then be removed from the machine for vulcanization, suitable caps secured to the ends of the mandrel being used to cover the ends of the tubular fabric. After vulcanization, the tubular fabric may be removed from the mandrel by pneumatic or hydraulic pressure, provision for the use of which is made in the plugs S<4>, one of which remains in one end of the mandrel during vulcanization. If a fabric band is to be produced, the mandrel bearing the tubular fabric passes from the extrusion die R to a conveying- device consisting of toothed chains L carried on sprocket-wheels N and arranged to press against and grip the fabric. A rotating knife K slits the fabric along one side, and the fabric, after flattening by pressure rollers 0, passes over a roller O<10> to a suitable storing-device. The whole machine is driven from a main shaft E by suitable gearing therefrom, which may be changed to give varying speeds of propulsion of the mandrel relative to the speed of revolution of the spool-carriers around it.
