Abstract

23,000. Craymer, H. J. Nov. 24. [Cognate Application, 7759/15.] Road-breakers. - Relates to hammering- apparatus for driving road - breaking chisels and consists in providing a bar c, Fig. 1, having a tup c<2> at each end which is turned over about each end alternately to strike with the opposite end. A slot in the bar c is engaged by a rotating crank f<1> which moves with acceleration during the downward movement, and the lower tup is moved to the right bv forks e<1> carried by chains d. The shaft p driven by hand rotates two shafts n through bevel-gears n<3>, n<2>. The shafts n carry clutch members k<1>, k<2> feathered thereon and moved to rotate either the worms m or the gears o. The worms m engage fixed racks l and are held between brackets a<2>, which support the frame b carrying the hammer and its driving-mechanism. A block h which is interposed between the tool i and the tup is supported by levers g connected to the clutches k<1>, k<2> by bars j, so that rotation of the shaft p in the direction indicated drives the worms and moves the frame b &c. down until the block h presses on the tool i and reverses the clutches. Continued rotation of the shaft p then drives the shafts t, Fig. 7, through the clutches k<1> and the bevel-gears o. The shafts t carry a chain-wheel which drives the chains d, a gear t<2> which drives the gear f<2> at onethird the speed, and a segmental gear s which intermittently drives the segmental gear s<1>. Normally the gear f<2> drives the crank through a pawl y, but after one and a half revolutions of the shafts t from the position shown in Fig. 7, the gears s, s', Fig. 10, engage and the crank f' is driven at an accelerated speed for half a revolution, the disk z, Fig. 11, overrunning the pawl y, so that it engages the next notch v when the tup c<2> strikes its blow. Reverse rotation of the shaft p rotates the worms m through ratchets arranged within them and feathered on the shafts n so that the frame is raised.
