Abstract
22,507. Berry, A. E. Nov. 14. Inserting wire and like metal nails.-In an apparatus for fastening together one or more pieces of wood or other material, particularly in box-nailing or like machines, an improved means of the moving inclined surface type is provided for cleating or clinching the ends of the nails, rivets, or pins. The wood &c. 6 rests on a vertically movable bar 2, Fig. 1, located in an opening in a work-table 1 and adjustably supported on a series of springs 3, in place of which, however, compressed air, hydraulic pressure, or other yielding means may be employed. The upper end of the bar 2 is formed with shoulders 2<1> to receive the curved ends of rectangular bars or rods 10, the opposite ends of which are also curved, or provided with short spindles, to have a pivotal engagement with recesses 1<3> in the table 1. The springs 3 are located at each point where nails are to be driven, and are of sufficient strength to resist downward movement of the bar 2 until the points of the nails abut against the bars 10, the inclination of which causes the points to turn outwards. The continued descent of the nail hammers then forces the bar 2 to descend until the bars 10 are horizontal, the effect of which is to bend the points of the nails back into the work. In a modified construction, Fig. 4, the bars are semicircular and are recessed to engage shoulders 2<1> on the bar 2.
