Abstract

22,123. Golby, F. W., [National Chemical Co.]. Nov. 6. Starching. - Comprises a construction of starching-machine of the kind in which the articles, while being fed through a vat by endless belts, have the starch projected through them by reciprocating pressing-members. The main feature of the present construction consists in moving the endless bolts intermittently between successive pressing operations. The articles are placed on the lower belt 8 at the righthand end of the machine and pass beneath the upper belt 26 before being carried down into the vat4. On emerging from the vat, excess starch is removed from the belts and articles by a resilient roller 75 acting in conjunction with the supporting - roller 22 and positioned by a pair of screwed rods 78 fitted with springs 80. The articles are delivered finally by the belt 8 to a table 9. While the belts are at rest, the portions in the vat are squeezed between a perforated plate 12, resiliently supported by four corner arms resting on springs 43, and a reciprocating head 13 which slides in guides 51 and is actuated by eccentrics 52 on a shaft 54 geared directly to the main driving-shaft. The head 13 is fitted with a projecting box-shaped frame 55 carrying spring pins 57 adapted to slide in guides on the head. During the first part of the downward movement of the head, the frame contacts with the plate 12 and thus encloses a quantity of starch, which is forced through the articles during the completion of the movement. On the upward movement, the frame remains in contact with the plate 12 longer than the head, thus enabling starch to be drawn through the articles by suction. The upper belt is driven by friction, but three of the rollers supporting the belt 8 are driven by skew gear 35 from a common shaft 36, which is rotated intermittently from the shaft 54 by eccentric and ratchet gear 65, 72. The eccentrics 65, 52 are set so that the belts are moved only during the upward movement of the head 13. The supporting-roller 6 is adjustable to tension the belt, while the rollers 7, 29 are provided with two oppositely-disposed spiral ribs to remove wrinkles from the belts. A modified construction of machine is shown in which the vat rests on a steam-jacket and the lower plate 12 is mounted rigidly, while springs are interposed between the reciprocating head and its guides.
