Abstract

21,734. Spiess, G. Oct. 29. Delivery apparatus. Relates to sheet-piling mechanism wherein sheet-counting mechanism operated by the passage of individual sheets operates mechanism for inserting a marking-strip after any desired number of sheets have been piled, the marking-strip being fed from a roll. Each sheet in passing in the direction marked A to the pile depresses a detector 1, the tail of which then depresses a detent 3 on a rock-arm 5 into the path of a cam 4, whereby, through the arm 5. link 6, bell-crank 7 and rod 8, a pawl 11 carried bv a loose arm 12 on a shaft 13 advances a ratchet-wheel 14, loose on the shaft, through one tooth. The wheel 14 has one deep tooth which, at each revolution of the wheel, permits the pawl to engage teeth on a smaller ratchet-wheel 15 fixed on the shaft 13, which, by a sleeve 21 and flexible member 22, is connected to a spring 24 and a bell-crank 20. The wheels 14, 15 are normally held against return movement by dogs 17, 16, and the flexible member 22 is gradually wound round the sleeve, as the wheel 15 is rotated, until an arm 19 loose on the shaft 13 and carrying a pin projecting into a concentric slot 18<a> in the wheel 15 is moved bv the slot end coming against the pin, whereby the arm is carried against and depresses the dog 16, so that the spring 24 can return the wheel to starting position. The number of teeth on the wheel 14 and the length of the slot 18<a> beyond the pin on the arm 19 determine the number of sheets between the marking-strips, which are fed from a web roll 28 each time the spring 24 acts, by a feed-roll 27 geared with a ratchet-wheel 26, which is driven by a pawl on an arm 25 rocked by a link 23 from the bell-crank 20. On the further piling of the sheets, and as the member 22 is gradually wound on the sleeve 21, the link 23 slowly rises, and a pivoted detent 31 thereon operates a knife 34 to sever the end of the web inserted in the pile.
