Abstract

21,561. Cowell, J., and McCaughan, T. Feb. 28, [Convention date]. Track apparatus for stopping trains; stopping trains from carriages.-Relates to brake valve mechanism of the kind described in Specification 21,406/14 and comprising track circuits and a speed-responsive device on the train. The valve C' controlling the connexion of the brake-pipe A<5> to the atmosphere at A<4> is carried on a rod D of the piston C, which is fitted with webs C', C' controlling an atmospheric port A<6> and a pressure port A<3>. To the upper end of the rod D is fitted a part E of a switch in the circuit of a solenoid F<2> and a brush G, which is carried by the engine &c. and arranged to engage a track contact in the usual way. The armature F<3> is formed on a detent F by which the parts are held in the inoperative position shown. Fixed to the lower end of the rod D is an arm D' connected to a speedometer, and the arrangement is such that, if the train approaches a ' danger ' section above a predetermined speed, the rod D is turned to close the switch E, E<1>, the detent F being then withdrawn and the port A<3> opened. The piston C and valve C<1> then descend, the passages A', A<5> are put into communication, and the brakes applied.
