Abstract

20,618. McAvoy, A. R. Oct. 6. Leakage, detecting and removing.-In vessels in which compressed air is used to remove water after the ordinary pumps have failed to check its rise, one or more continuous ventilation and inspection shafts 5 passing through the decks 3 and fitted with ladders 11 are arranged between pairs of ordinary vertical bulkheads 4. Each shaft is fitted with top and bottom closing doors and ports 6 communicating with the compartments and fitted with slides 7 and doors 8. Pet-cocks 10 indicate the height to which the water has risen. The Specification describes pipe lines for supplying compressed air to any or all of the compartments. By opening the doors in the shafts 5, compressed air may be used for ventilating the vessel.
