Strengthened tubular parts h, j receive attaching-springs, and, as shown, the legging is made in two parts sewn together along the line p. The legging is made of moleskin cloth, corduroy, felt or asbestos, and may consist of superposed sheets enclosing a sheet of wire gauze and filled with China-clay. It may be made additionally fire-resisting by treatment with a solution of phosphate and chloride of ammonia, followed by stove drying. When the wire gauze is used, the attaching-springs may be dispensed with.
