19,933. Evans, A. C., and Mitchell, P. J. Sept. 18. Composition fuel.-A pitchy binding-material, applicable for coal briquettes, is obtained from coal - tar or mineral oil residues by distilling off the light oils, adding coal dust or hydrocarbon soot (containing volatile matter), again heating until the added material softens and gives off vapours, cooling below 100‹ C., and thickening by means of sulphuric acid, or less preferably, sulphur chloride or the like. Coal-tar is distilled at 270‹ C. in a still provided with stirrers; the residue is cooled just below 250‹ C., to prevent combustion, before the coal dust &c. is added through a man-hole. The amount added varies between 2¢ and 15 per cent. Reheating takes place up to 270‹ C. or over; cooling may occur in the still or in a separate tank with a stirrer. Sulphuric acid of 170‹ Tw., amounting to between 0À25 and 1 per cent, is added slowly so that the temperature may not rise over 100‹ or fall below 49‹ C. The product softens and melts at about the same temperature as medium pitch and has a higher volatilization point by some 70‹ C., but is free from phenols. Shale oil or the like is distilled until of the same consistency as tar distilled at 270‹ C.
