Abstract

19,572. Short, G. H. Sept. 9. Steering and balancing ; planes, construction and arrangement of.-The front part of the laterallyextending wings of an aeroplane is hinged to the main part and controlled by a wind-vane so that the camber of the wing is varied according to the movements of the vane whereby the stability of the machine is maintained. The attitude of the vane may be controlled by the pilot for steering. In one form, the hinged front part a is secured to rods k carrying the pivoted wind-vane a<2>. The arm m on the vane is connected by a link p to a crank n pivoted to the wing b and controlled by the pilot. A gust striking the under surface of the vane raises it into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and increases the camber of the wing. The vane is slightly rotated on its pivot q as it rises. The vane may be arranged at the tips of the wings and may move in guides; or a single vane may control the front part of both wings. A balancing-plane a<1> follows the movements of the part a but may be adjusted relatively thereto by the pilot. The balancing-plane may be arranged as a combination of the front edge of the wing as shown in Fig. 3, or it may be situated on any part of the machine. In a modified form of wing, the upper surface of the front part is supported on a series of blade springs o and extends rearwardly of the pivot x in order to avoid a break in the continuity at this point. The covering may be of celluloid. The cross-section of the part a may be varied during its up and down movements by links 1, 2, 3 hinged together at one end and connected at their other ends respectively to the front edge of the part b and the lower and upper surfaces of the part a. The rear part of the wing may be movable and adjusted in cross-section similarly to the front part.
