Abstract

19,506. Wilson, W. H. Sept. 7. [Cognate Application, 3660/15.] Condensers.-Condensers are made by winding two continuous metal strips at right-angles to each other over insulating-sheets. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the sheets a, b are wound alternately backwards and forwards, the operation being carried out on a former, Fig. 2, comprising a base c and four vertical angle-bars d. In a modification, the sheets are wound round and round with the turns of the two strips alternating, each turn covering two fresh insulating-plates. A number of condenser segments may be connected in series, sheets of insulating-material arranged alternately at right-angles to each other being placed between the successive segments. The condenser may be impregnated with paraffin wax and surrounded by an insulating-casing 13 fitting into grooves in metal end plates 14, forming the terminals of the condenser, the plates being drawn together by bolts 17 to compress the conducting and insulating sheets.
