Abstract
18,351. Burns, W. A. Aug. 7. Sights.-Relates to means for automatically correcting sights for speed of target or of gun platform especially in the case of guns on air-craft, and consists in connecting the fore-sight or the sight-bar by means of linkwork or other mechanism to the gun mounting or to a pendulum, so that the horizontal distances of the two sight-pieces, or of two points on the sight-bar, from a vertical plane passing through a pivotal connexion between the gun or a part moving in elevation therewith and a foresight adapted to move parallel to itself, or through the axis of the gun trunnion in the case of a sight-bar, bear to one another a ratio equal to the ratio of the muzzle velocity of the projectile to the gun-platform speed or target speed. In the form shown in Fig. 4, intended especially for small-arms, the backsight J is on the gun us usual, and the foresight F is carried by a parallel motion device maintained horizontal by a pendulum PLW enclosed in a casing CS partially filled with viscous liquid to protect the pendulum from wind and vibrations. The distances VEL and SP are proportional respectively to the muzzle velocity of the projectile and to the speed of the gun platform.
