Abstract

Candles.-In the manufacture of candles having longitudinal holes to prevent guttering, the rods 6 forming the holes are withdrawn successively to reduce the strain upon the candles. The pistons 5 which discharge the candles from the mould 4 are yieldingly attached by springs and nuts m to a cross-piece 7, which is raised and lowered by screws 10. The rods 6, which are shown in two positions in Fig. 1, pass through the piston-heads 5' and are actuated bv a cross-piece 11, which is moved by toggles 13 pivoted to the cross-pieces 7, 11 and to rods 12 attached to blocks 15, 16, which are oppositely moved by oppositely rotating screws 17. As the cross-piece 11 ascends, the rods are lifted by flanges b, and as it descends, they are successively withdrawn by the flanges 11 engaging projections formed at varying heights on the separate rods 6. The rods are tapered and are guided by washers r and by the previously-made candles, and are preferably withdrawn while the candles are in the moulds.
